Polysorbate 40, also known as polyoxyethylene sorbitan monopalmitate, consists of sorbitol, ethylene oxide, and palmitic acid. It has a molecular formula of C62H122O26. At room temperature, it is in the form of a yellow to orange viscous liquid or paste. Polyoxyethylene 20 sorbitan monopalmitate is an O/W emulsifier with an HLB value of 15.6. It is soluble in water, ethanol, ethyl acetate, and toluene.

Applications
- Used as emulsifier, stabilizer, lubricant, softener, antistatic agent, wetting agent, penetrant, and diffuser in textile, paint pigment, printing, oil exploitation and transportation industries
- Used as emulsifier, dispersant, stabilizer, diffuser, lubricant, softener, antistatic agent, rust inhibitor, finishing agent, and viscosity reducer in detergent production and metal surface antirust cleaning
- Used as a component of cotton fiber and viscose cord tensioning agent
- Used as gas chromatography fixed liquid for alcohol, ketone, ester separation and separation of fatty acids and hydrocarbons
- Used as O/W type food emulsifier and dispersant for ice cream, bread, pastry, candy and other food products
