Polysorbate 85, also known as polyoxyethylene 20 sorbitan trioleate, is composed of sorbitol, ethylene oxide, and oleic acid. With molecular formula C100H188O28, it appears as a pale-yellow to orange oily liquid at room temperature. This O/W emulsifier has an HLB value of 11.0 and is soluble in ethanol, ethyl acetate, and most mineral and vegetable oils, while dispersing in water. In crude oil production, polysorbate 85 functions as an emulsifier and paraffin inhibitor.
