Polysorbate-85 (Tween-85) is a nonionic surfactant with the chemical name polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan trioleate. It appears as a yellow or amber clear oily liquid with an HLB value of 11.0. It functions as an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsifier that is easily soluble in polar solvents such as water and ethanol, but poorly soluble in mineral oil and light petroleum.
Applications
- Food Industry: Used as an emulsifier (E432) in ice cream, baked goods, margarine, beverage emulsified flavors, and more
- Cosmetics & Personal Care: Functions as emulsifier, solubilizer, and detergent in shampoo, shower gel, facial cleanser, lotion, face cream, sunscreen, etc.
- Industrial Applications: Serves as emulsifier, wetting agent, and dispersant in textiles, leather, paints, inks, agrochemicals, metalworking fluids and other fields
